Kilimanjaro Summit - Kili

9 day Kili climb using the Lemosho route with a 5-day wildlife walking safari visiting remote Hadzabe bushman and Maasai tribe

Soaring high above the African plains of Tanzania and Kenya stands the highest mountain on the African continent, Mount Kilimanjaro 19,340 ft. Our EMS Mount Kilimanjaro trip with a 5-day safari and cultural exploration gives you the best of what the area has to offer and will be the trip of a lifetime!

To give you the best possible opportunity for a successful hike and climb we will first spent a couple of days at the Karama Lodge so you can recover from the flight. While at the Karama Lodge we’ll head out for a full day of game viewing and a hike with local guides. This should get the blood moving and your bodies clock up to speed.

During the climb on Mt. Kilimanjaro, we will use the Lemosho route, which will connect to the Shira route then up to the summit from Barafu Camp. This specially designed EMS itinerary has a 98% rate of success. You didn’t come all this way not to summit! By using the Shira route we can spend more time getting to the summit (8 days), making your time on the mountain almost twice as long as other companies. You will find most companies don’t have a full day of rest during the beginning of your hike; we put an extra day at our camp above the Barranco Camp so that you can acclimatize before we start reaching the higher altitudes. This higher camp also cuts down our summit day by 3 hours.

We are one of the only companies that don’t have you hike all the way down to the Mweka Camp after you reach the summit. Instead, we end our summit day at the Millennium Camp, considered a better option than going the extra 4 hours down to the Mweka Camp. Once our climb is finished, we’ll spend one day back at the Karama Lodge to reorganize for the safari.

WALKING SAFARI

We think that seeing wild game is only one reason to go out on safari, another reason is to learn something about the local tribes and their way of life. EMS has designed this portion of your trip to give you the best of wildlife, cultural and ethnic peoples.

We’ll depart by 4x4 Toyota Landcruisers to the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, considered one of the premiere sites to view the widest variety of wild game in one place. Instead of driving around, we’ll get out of the vehicles to hike down into the 100 sq. mile amphitheater home to rhino, elephant, lion, as well as heads of zebra and wildebeest.

Today you’ll get the opportunity to do what many people never do and that is to travel on foot into the park with a hike up Mount Lemagarut for views of the Rift Valley, Lake Eyasi and the expanse of the Serengeti. Our group will be escorted by a National Park Game Warden that will lead the group through this lush forest.

Leaving the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation area, we drive to Lake Eyasi and the Yaida Valley. This exchange with the Hadzabe Bushmen, a tribe of people that use the “clicking sounds’ to communicate. The Bushmen also live in caves and live their natural way of life as hunter gathers and enjoy educating tourists about their culture.

Our last stop is the Monduli Mountains, home to a tribe of Maasai peoples. Our campsite overlooks the Rift Valley with fantastic views of Gelai, Ol Donyo Lengai, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru. Our Maasai hosts guide the group on foot for a game tour of their local area. Your Maasai guide will show you how they hunt and what significance the land tells them while hunting and to stay safe from attack. You’ll also have time to visit their village and to ask questions about their culture, customs and life.
