Incredible 14-day trek through high mountain valleys on the way to one of the most beautiful places in Nepal, Gokyo Lakes.
Also magnificent views of Mount Everest, only 20 miles away from the summit of Gokyo Ri 18,300’ & rarely crossed Renjo La 17,515’
We understand that seeing Mount Everest is one of the main reasons many people visit Nepal. The majority of people believe that to really see Everest you need to head toward the base camp, when actually you can get better views from Gokyo Ri (18,300-ft) and Machhermo Ri (17,500-ft) and the Renjo La (15,515-ft). So we invite you to view Mount Everest from a different perspective, from the Gokyo Lakes area. The Gokyo Lakes valley is located 20 miles (as the crow flies) from the summit of Mount Everest and will reward you with views that surpass just about any in the Himalayas.
You will be greeted upon arrival in Kathmandu and will spend the next day on a guided sightseeing tour of the many Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples. Our goal today is to give you some background and insight to the culture and people that live in this very isolated country.
Your trek will start on day 3 with the short flight to Lukla (9,300-ft), the staging ground for all treks to this area of Nepal. The beginning of this trek is the same as hiking to Everest Base Camp. On the way, we'll stay two nights in the village of Namche Bazaar to acclimatize. Namche is considered the trading center for the Khumbu region, and people walk from as far away as Tibet every Saturday to sell their wares here. This is also the hub onto which each trail converges, so yaks and people compete for space in this amphitheater style city.
After visiting Namche, we’ll head up the valley leaving the usual Everest trail and following the rivers run off from the Ngozumpa glacier. After two days we will stop again in the village of Machhermo for another rest day and the chance to hike up Machhermo Ri. Our Next stop will be the Gokyo Valley.
Your arrival into this high mountain valley called Gokyo is welcomed by a string of cobalt blue lakes that continue for the 3-hour hike to Gokyo Village, which sits at the foot of Gokyo Ri (18,300 ft) a huge black mound of rock and dirt. The next morning, you're invited to take the 3-hour hike to the summit of this black, rocky mound to witness the 360-degree Himalayan view offered only from this vantage point. The Himalayas stand like giants guarding the border into Tibet. From Gokyo Ri you'll see much more than Mount Everest -- there are magnificent views of many of the other 8000-meter peaks from here as well
Instead of repeating our trail up, we head over the non-technical pass called the Renjo La (17,515 ft), which leads into the next valley. The views from the pass are even more incredible than found on Gokyo Ri, due to the fact that we’re further away from the valley, where the view then opens up. We’ll be walking for the next three days in new territory on our way back to Namche, where we’ll meet the well-used trail back to Lukla.
One full day will be spent in Kathmandu before departure for home.
