Spectacular climb of Mount Elbrus with hikes in remote Baksan Valley for acclimatization.

The Caucasus mountain range stretches for about 1000 kilometers from the Black Sea to the Caspian, separating Europe from Asia. North of the main Caucasus ridge lays a land of mountain ridges running down to the Russian steppes. Each of these ridges is composed of many forested side valleys and snowy summits.

Mt. Elbrus - the highest summit in Europe - lies just a few kilometers into Europe and Russia, to the north of the main chain which contains many mountains over 5000 meters high. The Baskan Valley leads from the northern foothills to the chain. This is the most important and the best-developed valley in the Caucasus region, both because of the mineral deposits located near Tyrnyauz and because of Elbrus and dozens of magnificent mountains, which are visited, by a great number of tourists.

The double-breasted summit of Mount Elbrus can be seen for miles around from different parts of the Caucasus region. Both East (5621m) and West (5642m) summits are permanently covered with glacial snow. Tourists or local people rarely use many of the remote side valleys, but we’ll visit them for our acclimatization training.

Our EMS trip begins with a Moscow city tour. Then we fly to Mineralnye Vody and drive to the base hotel in the Baksan Valley. From the hotel we make several trips following beautiful forested valleys, walking through alpine meadows, crossing glaciated mountain passes and climbing some of the easiest summits which provide superb panoramas of the Caucasus Range. These initial trips will be porter supported and will involve camping and backpacking. They will provide us with fitness and acclimatization necessary for the ascent of Elbrus itself. For the ascent of Elbrus, we use a cable car system to take us to the height of about 3800m, where we stay in the Garabashi Huts and/or Diesel Hut (4200m). The actual program will depend on the weather, group condition and the availability of a snow cat, which we will use to help us up the lower slopes of the mountain (if available and necessary.)

After our climb to the summit of Mt. Elbrus, we’ll fly to St. Petersburg, the departure point for your return flight home. But before you depart we’ll spend a few hours sightseeing, taking in the wonder of Russia’s most beautiful city.
