TrueNorthSlideGothics
Hosted at the Peggy O'Brian Camp, includes summit of Gothics Mountain via the True North Face Slide.

Come join EMS and their professional backwoods guides as they host you at Peggy O’Brian Camp. Peggy O’Brian Camp is located 3.5 miles into the backwoods near John’s Brook Lodge at the base of the Great Range, in the heart of the High Peaks region. During this adventure you will be supplied with all your meals but will be expected to help with the portage of food and the preparation of the meals as needed.

On this trip we will climb to the summit of Gothics Mountain via the True North Face Slide. Expect high winds, rough and steep terrain, exposure and possible changing weather patterns along this hike. This day loop is roughly 6 miles with a gain and loss in elevation of around 2400’.

Along the trail you will experience amazing views and vistas as the Adirondacks open up behind you on an open slide track. Part of this route requires bushwhacking that can vary from open stream bed to thick spruce. A moderate fitness level will be needed to accomplish this goal. If you have questions regarding fitness or training ideas please feel free to contact us (888-755-TREK).

Note: these dates are during season transition. An updated gear list may be supplied to you closer to the date of the trip. Conditions vary in fall. Snow can be a factor at times in higher elevations. It maybe necessary to be geared up for winter conditions which can include but not be limited too snowshoes, crampons, layering etc…

Itinerary

Day one: (L & D) As a group we will meet at the EMS store in Lake Placid at 9:00am to stock up on last minute items, answer questions, and split up the group gear. Once all set, we can carpool to The Garden Trailhead. Carpooling will save on parking fees and leave room for other hikers. From the trailhead we will hike into Peggy O’Brian Camp and eat lunch. The remaining part of the day is for relaxing, talking, gathering water, preparing dinner and getting ready for the next days hike.

Day two: (B, L, D) This is our hiking day. We rise early for an aggressive day of peak-bagging. A quick breakfast will be available before the hike, and food for a bagged lunch will also be provided. We start this trek along the Orebed Trail and branch off following a stream that is fed by the North Face of Gothics Mountain. This stream brings us to the True North Face Slide which tops out just below the summit of Gothics Mountain (4736’, Adirondacks 10th Highest Peak). From here we will descend the famous cable route to the Saddleback/Gothics Col (4017’) where we will decide if we have the time or energy to summit Saddleback Mountain (4515’, Adirondacks 17th Highest Peak). Either way, we must start our descent from here down the Orebed Trail and back to camp. As a group we will prepare dinner and relax with some much deserved down time.

Day three: (B) Sleep in a little, you deserve it! When you wake up a nice breakfast will be waiting for you. After a relaxing morning we will pack up and hike out to our vehicles and part ways. This is a travel home day, so we will be out by early afternoon.
