Bike from Haines to Skagway along the historic Dalton Trail and White Pass gold rush routes to the Klondike.

While the two towns are only 15 miles apart by water, the paved road travels 360 miles through some of the most breathtaking scenery in Alaska!

We pass through three National and Provincial Parks that comprise the largest protected wilderness area in the world. Vehicle supported camping, B & B, and hotel stays along the way are inclided in this adventure. We will dine on gourmet Alaskan fare throughout. Ride our Specialized touring bikes, or bring your favorite bike for the tour of a lifetime!

Itinerary

Day one: (D) Travel to Haines, Alaska either by the state ferry or take a small plane from Juneau. This is where we start our tour! After getting settled on our hotel rooms, we will fit you to a bicycle. The afternoon is free to explore the coastal community of Haines. Haines, surrounded by mountains and glaciers, is the gateway to the Chilkat Valley which is one of a few ancient access routes to interior Alaska. We meet for an orientation in the late afternoon, followed by dinner at one of our fine local restaurants. The night is spent at a B&B.

Day two: (B,L,D) Distance- 47 miles
We mount our bikes in the morning and cycle along a glacial-fed river through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, home to the world's largest concentration of bald eagles. 200 to 400 birds live there year-round, with up to 4,000 observed during the annual Fall Congregation. We pass through Canadian Customs and camp in the Tatshenshini/Alsek Provincial Park by the banks of the Klehini River in British Columbia.

Day three: (B,L,D) Distance- 50 miles
We gradually wind our way up the Chilkat Pass breaking out above the tree line. Just 50 miles from the coast, the scenery changes from thick rainforest to vast alpine tundra. The evening is spent camping in the Yukon at Million Dollar Falls, an impressive sight with falls over cliffs in a narrow canyon.

Day four: (B,L,D) Distance- 37 miles
Today we bike through Kluane National Park, a land of majestic mountains, expansive lakes and open vistas. The park is also home to Canada’s highest peak, Mount Logan (19,545 ft). The night is enjoyed at a B&B near Haines Junction.

Day five: (B,L,D) Distance- 60 miles
We bike into Haines Junction where the Haines road joins the Alaska/Canada highway and head east on the AlCan over rolling hills. The dry interior climate is most evident in the region with scrub spruce and sandy soil. We camp the night near the historic trading post of Champagne.

Day six: (B,L) Distance- 54 miles
We continue southeast towards the Yukon River, crossing several tributaries as we wind our way into Whitehorse. The capital of the Yukon Territory, Whitehorse is a city of 20,000 hardy folks living on the banks of the mighty Yukon River. The night is spent in a hotel. Tonight you are free to explore town and select one of the many great restaurants for dinner.

Day seven: (B,L,D)
Today is a rest day in Whitehorse. You will have some time to sleep in, explore the city of Whitehorse by foot, bike one of the numerous local trails or canoe a few hours on the Yukon River, which passes through town. In the afternoon we will offer van transportation to nearby hot springs! These natural mineral waters are odourless and are flow deep within the earth, a truly unique and relaxing experience after a long week of biking. Tonight we will dine together at a great local restaurant.

Day eight: (B,L,D) Distance- 55 miles
We bike southeast on the AlCan for a short distance then turn south on the Klondike Highway. The coastal mountains beckon as you pass through the small community of Carcross. We skirt the lakes, which are the headwaters of the mighty Yukon River. The night is spent camping along the lakeshore.

Day nine: (B,L,D) Distance- 55 miles
After leaving the Yukon and reentering British Columbia, the coastal mountains rise around us as we bike towards the historic White Pass that takes us to the coast. A narrow gap leads to a thrilling 15 mile descent to the coastal gold rush town of Skagway, Alaska. We relax in a historic B&B while enjoying the sights and sounds of this colorful town.

Day ten: (B) We will enjoy a farewell breakfast together at the B&B in Skagway. Following breakfast you may choose to explore historic Skagway on your own. To travel home, you may take the Alaska Marine Highway ferry from Skagway or catch a flight in a small plane directly to Juneau to catch connecting flights home. You may also choose to extend your vacation either regionally or statewide.
